Here is a quick video to get an idea of what you'll be doing. Scroll down for more detailed instructions :)
Step 1
Start by cutting two pieces of rope in each color of your rainbow. If creating a small rainbow, use one strand per color (for keychains, etc). Use increments of 2". For example, my rainbow was 16", 18", 20", 22", 24".
Step 2
Tape two rope pieces together with masking tape where you want them to begin and end with wrapping yarn. Leave room for the dangling cotton strings or "clouds" at the end.
Step 3
Cut out a cardboard template. This will become the structure and backing of your rainbow. You can also use wire, glued between your two rope strands if preferred instead. (Suggested: Hole punch the cardboard towards the top and feed yarn or twine through in loop shape, this is how you will hang your rainbow when it's completed)
Step 4
Place a small hot glue dab on the end of the rope (over masking tape) to hold the start of your yarn. Tightly wrap your cotton rope with yarn as neatly as possible. End with another hot glue dab
to secure the end of the yarn, try to keep those ends on the back so when it comes time to glue to the cardboard, you won't see the "seams". Do your best to end the yarn ending evenly across all the colors. You can always add a little yarn to each at the end to make them even.
Step 5
Glue the yarn wrapped rope to cardboard backing, lining up the end of the yarn with the end of the cardboard. Cotton rope will dangle past the cardboard at the end. Continue wrapping rope and gluing to each previous wrapped rope. Glue to backing as well as small glue dots between the wrapped yarn pieces to keep them tight together.
Step 6
When all the colors are added, cut the excess cardboard backing away so it is no longer visible from the front.
Step 7
Use the comb to comb out the cotton rope into long individual strands. Cut to desired length, evenly on both sides.
Step 8
If you didn't hole punch the cardboard, cut a little piece of yarn or twine to make a loop to hang the rainbow. Add wood beads as desired. Hot glue generously to cardboard backing.
And you're done! Enjoy your cute little rainbow. I've seen where people have done GIANT ones out of pool noodles and I think that's next on my list haha.
